First Step Child Care Case Study Online

A training course for those who would like to open a home-based child care program or would like additional knowledge to run an existing child care business. This course qualifies towards instructional accreditation for hours needed to obtain a child care license through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

What does the Developing Your Family Child Care Business course cover?

This class covers the business aspects of operating a family child care program, including topics like business ownership, managing and organizing your business, analyzing the market, promoting your business to families, cash flow, keeping the books, parent contract and writing a parent handbook.

What does this course cost?

Often, a course like this would cost several hundred dollars. However, thanks to funding from the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce/GO Topeka/Entrepreneurial and Minority Business Development Programs, scholarships cover all but $55.00 of the cost for participants from Shawnee County.

What support is available for me?

The instructor operated a successful family child care program for many years. Additionally, experienced family child care providers will be available to serve as “business coaches,” answering additional questions you may have. All participants will receive a course manual and supporting resources at each session to help you establish your business.

I’m not completely sure operating a family child care business is for me.

Please contact Cyndi Hermacillo-Legg, 785.231.6000, and we can talk further about things you’ll want to think about as you make your decision. Operating any business is a big responsibility, and we want you to have all the information you need to make a wise decision.

Will this class count toward obtaining a childcare license?

Yes, this course qualifies towards 26 instructional hours needed to obtain a child care license through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
