The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) provides public advocates that concentrate on waste, water, air and remediation, as a resource for businesses that have environmental questions.
The mission of the Division of Environment is the protection of the public health and environment. The Division conducts regulatory programs involving public water supplies, industrial discharges, wastewater treatment systems, solid waste landfills, hazardous waste, air emissions, radioactive materials, asbestos removal, refined petroleum storage tanks, and other sources which impact the environment. In addition, the Division administers other programs to remediate contamination, lessen nonpoint pollution, and evaluate environmental conditions across the state.
The Division of Environment works vigorously with operators to achieve compliance with state and federal environmental statutes and regulations. The regulatory programs rely upon compliance inspections and monitoring to determine compliance. The Division also conducts financial or technical assistance programs such as the Wastewater Revolving Loan Fund and the Pollution Prevention Program to assist the regulated community.
Kansas Environmental Facts:
Kansas’ clean air is not only healthy, it also translates into simpler, less expensive requirements for industries considering a Kansas location. With the exception of ozone-maintenance agreements in Wyandotte and Johnson counties, the entire state is an air quality attainment area. In fact, Kansas City is the first and largest metropolitan region in the country re-designated as an attainment area according to the federal clean air standards for ozone. Because the state has met all national ambient air quality standards, air emissions quality restrictions are limited.
